Another week closer to Symposium 2020 . . . and this week we bring you a preview of some exciting updates that we are making to the Steampunk Olympiad.
To better organize the Olympiad, and make it more inclusive for Symposium attendees, we have been working with the Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio Steampunk Societies to move the contest to the next level . . . in which neighboring states are now battling each other in friendly competition!
Local Airships of each state have the opportunity to unite under the banner of its Fleet, and each state will have its Admiral of the Fleet, recognized by the Steampunk Symposium as the rallying leader for the weekend of the convention. We have the initial details of the Admirals for the Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio Fleets, and we look forward to adding more as we hear back from other nearby states.
The actual running of the Steampunk Olympiad will remain pretty much the same. Individuals wanting to enter a contest make a donation to our charity partner NAMI to register for the event. The point system remains the same with winners having the opportunity to collect points for their Airship, but in addition to this we shall be keeping track of points for Fleets as well. Individuals will still be able to win prizes (and glory) in the games, but the big contest will be to see which Fleet earns the most points over the weekend. This week we start our Admiral Profiles with the new leader of the Indiana Fleet . . . Admiral Nagle!
Admiral Nagle of the Indiana Fleet
Caelyn Nagle was a relative late bloomer to Steampunk, coming to it in 2010 after seeing a steampunk crafting video on Youtube, but he has done quite a lot for the community. He has been a volunteer and vendor at several steampunk conventions, has developed convention tracks, is an avid steampunk crafter, and has founded three steampunk communities in three different states. The last of these is the newly founded (2018) Fort Wayne Steampunk Society in the state of Indiana.
Caelyn has several different steampunk personas, conveyed solely by his garb and props, rather than by role playing. In this case, as Admiral of the state of Indiana’s competition in the Steampunk Olympiad, he vows to do as much as possible to rally the competitors of his state, so they can bring everything they’ve got to the competition.
So if you are from Indiana, no matter what city or town, get ready to bring fierce competition to the games, and by all means, practice, practice, practice. We may not know if there will be any new games in 2020, but it doesn’t hurt, in fact I KNOW it can help, to practice at all the different physical and mental games we know exist. And if you have the means, build a tricycle (Faux Penny Farthing Races), an RC Dirigible (Dirigible Races), RC teapot (Teapot Races), and/or a wicked cool foam dart dueling set (High Noon NERF Dual). Rooms start at $95/night (plus tax & fees) for doubles and kings, and (depending on availability) there are a range of suites from $139/night (plus tax & fees) to $190/night (plus tax & fees).
