Call for Panels at Steampunk Empire Symposium

Would you like to present a panel at the Steampunk Empire Symposium? Although we have many splendid potential panels for our attendees’ edification and delight, yours can be considered too. Panel categories include Basic/Intermediate Steampunk, Clothing, Fascinating, Debauchery, and Hands-On. We are interested in workshop type activities and are open to small fees being charged.

Contact Gintia Peaseblossom on Facebook (preferred) or by emailing [email protected]. Deadline for proposals is Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013.

Include your topic and what you have in mind, at the very least. Much preferred is a title and description (such as would appear in a program book), along with name(s) of presenter(s) and notes as to their experience as speakers, if available.

Catching Up With Steam Powered Giraffe

Representatives of the Steampunk Empire Symposium got to see the Steam Powered Giraffe perform in person earlier this year and were amazed. Their stage presentation and musical quality made them a standout music presence at the World Steam Expo and marked them as a band to watch. For those new to the group, here’s how they describe themselves on their official site:

Steampunk and Futurism mesh together with mime and music to create a breathtakingly imaginative act. Hydraulics hiss and motors hum as three robots begin to snap into mechanical movement. Their instruments ring and the automatons begin to belt out in three-part harmony. The robots of Steam Powered Giraffe are like nothing you’ve ever seen. The malfunctioning joke-spewing metal men play a collection of original Vaudeville inspired tunes fused with modern flare and executed in a super-sleek, one-of-a-kind performance. More than just a band, Steam Powered Giraffe is an experience that must be seen and heard by the entire family.

You would think that studio albums, road tours and a web comic series would dominate these guys time, but that is not the case. The robots of Steam Powered Giraffe have been performing all summer at the San Diego Zoo in what looks like a bit of a musical marathon. From June 23rd until September 3rd (near the main entrance inside the Zoo), they’ve been doing four shows a day plus a meet and greet photo-op each evening. The following video is a sample from their time at the zoo:

Check them out on the web at steampoweredgiraffe.com and bask in the audio fun via their YouTube channel when you have some time to kill. That channel will grab and hold your attention for a while so make sure you have time to spend when you click, trust us.

Steampunk at the Derby

We had a great time promoting the Symposium, Pandoracon and the Midsummer Masquerade at Derby City Comic Con over the course of last weekend. During that time we would eventually purchase that convention adding a new show to our event lineup for 2013. Along the way, we were able to chat with a large number of fans and reaction, especially when discussing the Symposium, was quite strong. It was also great getting to say hello to Pandoracon guest Billy Tackett.

Aloysius Fox journeyed on to Ba-Con where he was able to chat face to face with Pandoracon guests Jeff Carlisle and Jason Carter and further promote each of our shows. It was a busy weekend, but the exposure each show received was worth the effort.

Over on our Charlie Tonic Hour site, Ginny Tonic does a great job looking back on the Derby City Comic Con show sharing a few photos and commentary on the event. We’re making a point this year to get out and meet with new audiences, new shows and spread the word about the Steampunk Empire Symposium. We have even bigger plans for our second year 2013 show (taking place April 26-28, 2013) and as soon as those details are finalized, we’ll be back with more updates intermixed with all the other stories we’re sharing here throughout the year.
