Greetings future Symposium attendees! My name is CaelynTek and I am the games director this year at the Symposium. You may or may not know that the Steampunk Empire Symposium is most well know for The Symposium Games! The Symposium Games are a contest of wits, dexterity, craft, intelligence, engineering and science. These games are meant to test the members and crew of the various Airships and Groups that attend the Symposium and register with the Symposium Games. Each game has a certain number of points allocated to the winners (usually 1st, 2nd and 3rd place) and when members of your group win, they earn points for your group (and a Symposium Games Pin, which cannot be purchased, it can only be won.), The points members of your group win in each game add up and may ultimately win your group the Symposium Games Trophy! There are also several events within the symposium that aren’t games, but that may be sources for Symposium Games points, details on those events will be released as the Symposium draws near.

The games are a little bit different each year, and this year with our Steam Wars theme, many of the games have a Star Wa. . . excuse me, Steam Wars theme themselves. Over the next week or so we will be releasing the names and rules for all of the SIX different official GAMES for the 2014 Symposium. (Not counting the non-game scored events)

Without further ado, here are the rules for Lightsaber Cricket!

First, here is a printable PDF of these rules SES14_Lightsaber_Cricket_Rules,pdf

1. The General Idea: For those unfamiliar with the game of cricket, one of the primary features of the game included a bowler/pitcher throwing a ball past a person with a bat. The bowler is attempting to knock wooden wickets (not Ewoks) off of posts that are stuck in the ground behind the batter. The batter is trying to prevent the bowler from doing so by swinging their bat to deflect the ball. Well in this game, the participant/batter has a Lightsaber Cricket Bat (also “Cricketsaber”) and is trying to prevent a person with a BIG NERF gun from shooting a missile down the small thermal exhaust port, just below the main port, and blowing up the Death Star.

2. Equipment Needed

a. One Lightsaber Cricket Bat will be provided, to share amongst all game participants. The provided “Cricketsaber” is all we need, but if you wish to make and bring your own custom Cricketsaber, it must be based on a PLASTIC cricket bat. The best search term on Amazon.com is “Beach Cricket Set” or “Beach Cricket Bat”. Make sure to look for something in the size 5 or 6 range (not all of them will mention the bat size).

b. One NERF rifle that shoots MEGA darts. (Provided by SES, to be used by Games Staff, not by participants)

c. One small thermal exhaust port, Just above the main port. (A target, provided by SES)

3. The Rules/Sequence of Play

a. Each competing group/airship will provide up to TWO participants/expendable death star crew members. In no specific order, participants will step up to the small, seemingly insignificant thermal exhaust port and must defend it with a Cricketsaber. (Either ours or yours) I don’t know what the big deal is, I mean really, it’s only 2 meters across! (Actually ours is a foot in diameter).

b. The Games Staff will provide one dedicated and impartial rebel pilot/gunner. That gunner will be shooting at the thermal exhaust port with a really big steampunky looking NERF gun.

c. Each participant will start the game with 6 points and will have to defend the exhaust port from a series of 6 shots at random intervals, fired from a set of specific angles and ranges. Please don’t swing so hard as to destroy the NERF darts, all you have to do is block them, there are no extra points for distance.

d. The participant cannot block shots with their body or anything other than the cricket bat. (No crowding the exhaust port)

e. The exhaust port will have a method to determine if a shot has made it through. If a shot makes it through the port, the group loses a point.

f. The participant with the most remaining points after the first round wins. If there is a tie for any place, there will be a tie breaker round.

4. Victory Point Distribution:

First Place: 50
Second Place: 30
Third Place: 20
