Steampunk at Comic Con

This past weekend San Diego Comic Con drew the capped amount of 130,000 attendees to the show. As the event wrapped word began filtering out that steampunk was alive and well in this cultural cornucopia of cool. We’re going to run through a few media stories that emerged following the show so you get a flavor of what people are saying about our wonderful world of anachronistic fun.

Steampunk Soars Into Mainstream - NBC 7 San Diego

From literature to fashion to music, the attraction to Steampunk is growing. The most obvious signs are the gears, goggles, leather and lace as characterized in the late 1800’s but there is more to it. At Comic-Con 2012, the Steampunk panel was among the more popular ones, drawing a crowd of more than 500 fans.

Steampunk genre grows at Con - U~T San Diego News

Thursday’s “Witty Women of Steampunk” panel was packed full of those donning steampunk garb as well as a lot of people who simply enjoy reading steampunk literature or are interested in putting together a costume in the future.

Long Lines and Steampunk at the Masquerade - Back Stage News

The masquerade is well worth the wait for both the spectators and the participants. Some people plan their costumes and accompanying skit for the competition all year. It would be an insult to compare their creations to typical Halloween costume. There are often moving parts and carefully crafted props. Cosplayers spend countless hours laboring over their designs, and they’ll often combine forces to register for the masquerade with a themed group!

Though they didn’t enter the masquerade, two huge steampunk-themed comics groups made a splash in the exhibit hall. The recent steampunk trend has seeped into so many facets of pop culture, and costuming is no exception. The cosplay groups took popular characters from the DC Comics and Marvel universes and altered them to fit the genre. Characters such as Batgirl, Huntress, Rogue, Forge, Green Arrow, and so many more were transformed into Victorian-esque visions. They stopped traffic on the convention floor and ended up posing for photos at the rear of the convention center.
