Art of the Wild West: Transcendentalism and the Hudson River School

Posted on Posted in Presentations

The Steampunk Symposium 2020 Program explores how as America expanded its borders, it discovered a wild and beautiful West.

Presented by Fiona Finnigan.

The natural beauty of the “wild west” inspired a whole generation of artists who came to be known as the Hudson River School. Transcendentalism was their philosophy and nature was their church.

Fiona Finnigan received her Masters of History of Visual and Material Culture (that’s the history of stuff!) from Southern Illinois University in 2018. She is particularly interested in Turn of the Century Decorative Arts and shiny things. In her free time she enjoys working on her steampunk gear and every kind of needle work know to man.
