The first gathering of the League of Cincinnati Steampunks was on October 15th, 2008, which means that the Cincinnati Steampunk scene is drawing ever closer to its tenth anniversary. In that time the numbers have grown from six people to an average of 60 people per month, and sometimes over 100 people, but for a considerable number of Cincinnati Steampunks there has been a factor that prevents them from attending more Salons . . . they have kids.
Over the years a constant question that gets asked of the Cincinnati Steampunk Salon is “Is it family friendly?” Until recently the answer was “No, not really,” but we came to wonder, “Well, why not?” For eight and half years the Salon has been a 21+ event because it has been hosted in bars, but our current home (since April 2014) has been Molly Malone’s in Covington, KY (directly across the river from Cincinnati) which is also a restaurant until a certain hour in the evening. After some communication with the management of Molly Malone’s, we managed to reach a new arrangement for the Cincinnati Steampunk Salon.
Starting on Saturday July, 1st, 2017, we shall begin a trial period of having the Salon start an hour earlier at 7PM in order to make the first two hours all ages and family friendly; people can bring their children until 9PM. At 9PM the Salon returns to its usual 21+ event status, so for those who are allergic to kids, don’t worry, the latter half of the Salon is still just the grown ups 🙂
